Description

Mitutoyo TM-Series objectives (2×, 5×, 10×) set the image scale, field of view, depth of field, and working distance—total magnification is eyepiece × objective. The 2× gives the widest view and longest working distance for general inspection and layout/feature location, while 5× is the balanced everyday choice for dimensional and angle reads. The 10× delivers the most detail for tiny features (burrs, small radii, thread flanks) but with a smaller field and shallower depth of field, so use steady support and even illumination.

Part Number  Magnification Numerical Aperture (N.A.) Working Distance
176-138 2X 0.07 67mm (2.638″)
176-139 5X 0.10 33mm (1.299″)
176-137 10X 0.14 14mm (0.551″)
About the TM series toolmaker’s microscope
  • Purpose: A toolmaker’s microscope is used to measure the dimensions and angles of small, machined parts.
  • Total magnification: The total magnification of the microscope can be changed from 20X to 200X by using different eyepieces and objectives.
  • Standard equipment: The 2X objective (176-138) is typically included as a standard accessory with the TM-505B and TM-1005B models.
  • Optional accessories: The 5X and 10X objectives are optional accessories that can be purchased separately to expand the microscope’s capabilities.

Product What it does
176-138 — TM-Series 2× Objective Entry magnification for fast, general inspection. Widest field of view and the longest working distance, so there’s more space above the part for
fixturing and easier focusing. Ideal for layout checks, hole locations, outer profiles, and go/no-go measurements on small tools and components.

  • Total magnification with common eyepieces: 10× → 20×, 15× → 30×, 20× → 40×
  • Best when you need speed, context, and comfortable clearance under the lens
  • Pairs well with transmitted backlight for crisp silhouettes
176-139 — TM-Series 5× Objective Balanced choice for finer edge picking without sacrificing too much working distance. Useful for tighter tolerances, small radii, and thread forms where
extra detail helps but you still want practical clearance for a V-block, centers, or a rotary table.

  • Total magnification: 10× → 50×, 15× → 75×, 20× → 100×
  • Good mix of detail and ease of use; popular as the everyday “do-more” objective
  • Works great with either transmitted light (dimensions) or oblique/ring light (surface/burrs)
176-137 — TM-Series 10× Objective Higher magnification for very small features: fine burrs, tiny chamfers, small gear teeth, micro-holes, and close tolerance edge work. Narrower field of view
and a shorter working distance than 2×/5×, so fixturing and focus are more deliberate—but you get the detail needed for critical inspection.

  • Total magnification: 10× → 100×, 15× → 150×, 20× → 200×
  • Best for micro-features and tight tolerance verification
  • Use steady support and even lighting (ring light helps on shiny parts)

Notes: Total magnification = objective power × eyepiece power. As magnification increases, field of view and working distance typically decrease.
For dimensional edges, use transmitted backlight; for surface texture or burrs, add oblique or ring illumination. All three objectives fit the TM-Series nosepiece and can be swapped quickly to match the task.
